FORT WAYNE — “Charity for the poor is like a living flame; the drier the fuel, the brighter it burns. In your service to the poor do not give only your hands but also your hearts. Charity, to be fruitful, must cost us.” These beautiful words of St. Teresa of Kolkata are the inspiration for a new medical mission that has been formed in Fort Wayne.
In October 2019 I went on a mission trip to Ukpor Village, Anambra State, Nigeria. It was a medical mission, and I am an educator, which did not make sense to me. I heard the advertisement for Divine Healer Medical Missions on Redeemer Radio, and the thoughts just wouldn’t go away. I thought there was no way I could go with 6 children still at home. I mentioned it to my husband, and he was very into me going. I bought the airline ticket, and I was going! I thought I had lost my mind!
Even though I am not a medical professional, there was plenty for me to do on the mission trip. I tested people’s eyesight and found them glasses. The joy something as simple as being able to read astonished me. The poverty that is surrounding Ukpor is astounding. People were malnourished and dehydrated. People had infections that were making it difficult to function at all. Yet the people are so joyful and welcoming. I know that I got more out of this trip than the people that the mission served.
My reason for going on this medical mission trip is to have an opportunity to serve the Lord though serving the people of Nigeria in need of medical care as a part of a faith based medical mission team. I am looking forward to getting to know people from the areas where we will be serving in Nigeria, to create new friendships, renew friendships, and to share this wonderful experience with my daughter who also plans to come on this trip. I have served on several international medical mission trips in the past, and truly feel blessed by the opportunity to care for and serve others who are in need. In addition, I find that the time away from life as we know it in the United States is a time of spiritual, mental, and physical renewal as we work to serve others. I look forward to the opportunity to be a part of the team.
I recently went on my medical mission trip with Divine Healer. The impact of this on the Nigerian People, I believe, was very positive. They were able to receive medical care from nurses and providers and other staff members. They were treated with respect and dignity enduring long waits in the heat and also rain. I was a provider and the gift of being able to provide care for the poor was a very rewarding experience. It was difficult not really knowing what to expect and my eyes were opened to the reality of the impoverished in other countries who do not have drinking water that is clean. It broke my heart seeing the joy and the smiles on their faces when we showed up and began to provide them with basic to complicated care. I pray that our Father in heaven was praised and glorified.
